Moving House with Kids, Pets and Plants: A Practical Guide

Packing the house is the easy part to plan for. What actually determines how smooth a moving day feels is how well you have prepared the people and living things in the house who did not ask to move — children, pets and, if you care about them, your plants. This guide is about that side of the move.

Preparing children by age group

Children read a moving house differently depending on age, and preparing them accordingly reduces the meltdowns that otherwise show up on the worst possible day — moving day itself.

• Toddlers and pre-schoolers (under 5): They will not understand "we are moving" as a concept. Keep their routine — nap time, favourite toy, familiar blanket — as unchanged as possible through the week. Pack their room last and unpack it first.
• Primary school age (6-10): Explain the move a few days ahead, show them photos of the new house or area if you have any, and let them pack a small personal box themselves. Involvement reduces anxiety more than reassurance does.
• Older children and teens (11+): Involve them in decisions where practical — their room layout at the new house, what to do about their friend circle, whether they want to help with the school transfer paperwork. Being consulted matters more at this age than being managed.

School transfer certificate and records

If the move crosses a school year or a city, start the school transfer certificate (TC) process as early as you know the move is happening — most schools need written notice and settle any pending fees before issuing it. Along with the TC, collect the last report card, bonafide certificate if needed, and immunisation records if the new school asks for them. Keep this folder with you, not packed into the moving truck.

The one room that stays packed last and unpacked first

Pick one room — usually the children's room or a shared bedroom — and pack it last on packing day, then have the crew unload and unpack it first at the new house. Having one familiar, set-up space on the first evening in a new house does more for a child's sense of stability than almost anything else you can plan.

The first-night essentials box

Pack one clearly labelled box — separate from the general household cartons — with what the family needs for the first evening and morning before anything else is unpacked.

• Bedsheets, pillows and a light blanket for each person
• Basic toiletries, towels and a change of clothes
• Phone chargers and a power extension board
• Drinking water, a kettle or basic cooking essentials, and snacks
• Any regular medication, and a small first-aid kit
• A child's comfort item — soft toy, blanket — placed on top, not at the bottom

Talking to teachers and telling friends

If the move happens mid-term, give the current school and class teacher notice well ahead so they can prepare records and, where the school allows it, a small goodbye moment for younger children. For older children, a short farewell gathering with close friends in the last week — even something simple at home — helps more than people expect. Children who get a clear sense of closure with their old circle generally settle faster at the new school than those who leave abruptly.

Pets on moving day

Moving day is loud, doors stay open for hours, and strangers are walking in and out constantly — this is disorienting and genuinely risky for a pet, not just inconvenient.

1. 1Set up one closed room, away from the front door and loading path, with water, familiar bedding and a litter tray or toilet arrangement. Keep the pet there with a sign on the door so the crew does not open it.
2. 2Keep vaccination and vet records handy, especially for an interstate move — some states and airlines/transport services ask for a recent health certificate.
3. 3If the crate or carrier is new, let the pet spend time in it over the preceding week so travel day is not the first time they are in it.
4. 4Keep feeding and watering times close to the normal routine on moving day itself, even if the rest of the schedule is disrupted.
5. 5Do not send a pet in the goods vehicle. Pets travel with the family, in an air-conditioned personal vehicle with breaks, never in the closed cargo area of a moving truck — heat, duration and lack of supervision make this genuinely unsafe.

Moving plants without losing them

Plants are more fragile in transit than most people expect — root shock, heat inside a closed vehicle and days without light all take a toll, especially on a long-distance move.

• Water the plant lightly a day before the move — not heavily, since waterlogged soil is heavier and messier to transport, but dry soil stresses the roots further.
• For larger plants being repotted or moved out of the ground, wrap the root ball in damp cloth or newspaper and secure it, rather than leaving soil loose.
• Transport smaller pots upright in a shallow crate or nursery tray so they do not tip and spill during the ride.
• Give plants some airflow and indirect light during transit where possible — a fully sealed, dark container for more than a few hours stresses most plants badly.
• Some plants genuinely do not survive a long-distance move well — delicate flowering plants and old, root-bound plants in particular. For a long haul, consider gifting these ahead rather than risking the journey, and propagate cuttings of anything you especially want to keep.
• Plants generally travel better in a personal vehicle than in the closed goods truck, where temperature and light are worse and the journey is longer.

Settling a pet into the new house

When you reach the new house, resist the urge to let a dog or cat explore the whole place at once. Set them up in one room with their bed, food and water, and let them expand into the rest of the house gradually over a day or two once the loading and unloading noise has stopped. For cats especially, a new house with unfamiliar smells and an open front door during unloading is a real escape risk — keep them confined until the move is fully done and the door traffic has settled.
